Wanna know what plugins power SugarDo? One of the wonderful things about WordPress is the wealth of super cool plugins that people have written to make it do almost anything you need to do. A post over on Problogger got me thinking what people might like to know about Sugardo, and the most obvious thing is the plugins that it uses. Well, SugarDo uses only 4 plugins around…and one big bolt-on that’s not public. Here’s the list:

Akismet…of course. This standard plugin comes included with WordPress and it lets you stop spammers automatically. It is run by the company that started WordPress and it does a pretty good job too. I still moderate comments and catch some spammers that get by Akismet, but if you’re going to have any traffic at all, you’ll probably want to use this one.

Custom Admin Branding by Josh Beyers. This plugin lets you easily add your logo to the top of your admin pages and more importantly to your Login and Register pages. Just fix up the included files with your logo and put them in the plugin’s image folder and your ready to rol after you activate.

IWG Hide Dashboard by Thomas Schneider. This plugin lets you hide the WordPress dashboard from users that login. You have to use the next program to create a special role that you can assign as a default to new users. This role will tell the plugin to hide the dashboard from any user that has the role.

Role Manager also by Thomas Schneider. This program lets you set all sorts of rights for the different roles that users of your site might be assigned. It is also required for using the Hide Dashboard plugin above. That is the only thing I’m using it for in SugarDo, but I do use in my CityTracs site to allow users to post articles.

WordPress Database Backup by Austin Matzko. Austin has created one of the most valuable WP plugins you can put on your site. While your Web Host probably makes daily backups of your server, that might require a lot of red tape and craziness to get them to give you the back up of your database. This plugin will email you your database on a hourly, twice daily, daily, or weekly basis. Since SugarDo handles other peoples important info, I want to make sure that I have that date backed up as often as possible. A nice, fat GMail account will hold a lot of to-do list backups.

The SugarDo.com application by me. Well, this is not exactly a plugin anymore. It started life as a plugin and I later hacked away all of Wordpress except for the user login verification code to make SugarDo as fast as possible. Frankly, WordPress includes nearly all of its application files whenever you do anything. I wanted SugarDo to open as few files as possible, to keep its memory requirements low and its processing as fast as absolutely possible. I would love for someone to help me put SugarDo into a proper Wordpress plugin sometime that I could release into the wild, but that is going to take some doing.

There are really tons of great plugins, and I use more at my blog WhyPad.com and my travel site, CityTracs.com. But I wanted to keep SugarDo as lightweight and fast as possible. I’ll be glad to answer any questions you might have about the development of SugarDo. Just ask.

Cheers!

Hi SugarDoers!

I’ve been testing the new Google Chrome browser and wanted to let you know that SugarDo works great with it. In fact, since SugarDo uses Javascript very heavily in its application, Chrome may be the fastest browser available for SugarDo. Chrome is specially optimized to interpret Javascript at blazing fast speeds. As more and more web apps become dependant on Javascript, browsers will have to pay more attention to how handle it.

At this point, I’d say give Chrome a try against your favorite Web apps. I was frankly BLOWN AWAY! There’s a lot to like about Chrome, but it has some drawbacks too, as you might imagine. You’ll have to see if there is anything you can’t live with (or without). If speed is what get’s you jazzed, then Chrome delivers in blazing colors.

Cheers,

Welcome to the new SugarDo! Click My Lists to go to your to-do lists at any time. You will always find the link in the top right navigation bar.

If you’ve used SugarDo To-do lists in the past, you already know that it’s the easiest to-do list on the web…IMHO of course. Well, the new ‘Do is even easier.

Returning users! You must do the lost/forgot password, or check your email for the one assigned by the system.

We apologize for the inconvenience, but we have moved SugarDo to the Wordpress platform and this has caused us to lose all the old passwords. Your old passwords were encrypted (of course…and as will be your new one), so we couldn’t transfer them to the new system when we recreated your user names. Wordpress automatically assigned you a new password and emailed it to your email address on file in the old system.

You should still see all of your lists and list items. Please contact us if you do not and we’ll get you fixed up.

We hope you are able to get things done and stay organized even faster and better than before. As always if there are features you’d like to see, let us know.

Thanks for using SugarDo. We love having you here!

Byron

P.S. Thanks to Matito on Flickr for releasing the Fireworks photo under the CC!
